Final Video

I decided to feature my video about my sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma because it is such a huge part of my life. After one year I have made best friends, created amazing memories and have become a better woman because of this amazing chapter.
To make the visual aspect of my video I gather lots of footage with my iPhone while hanging out at the house of sisters spending time together, decorations, bulletin boards and the house itself. I also used several pictures I have taken throughout the last year that I felt were extremely important in my storyline as well as giving aesthetic appeal. I chose to add the song Take Me Home by Cash Cash because it is upbeat with great energy. I compiled the footage to follow the story line of three basic components and values our chapter deems most important: philanthropy, leadership, and sisterhood. I started the story line by introducing the house and then begin to show different philanthropies the chapter has participated in or put on. I added the value in text I was displaying through the footage to narrate the story. I also added text to show the names of the different philanthropies. Then I progressed to leadership where I showed a past and our present presidents accepting an award last year at the Greek Arete awards ceremony. I also showed our chapter council at the award ceremony and Megan, our president, working on her computer. Then I showed the most important value of our chapter: sisterhood by displaying a picture of my biological sister and I hugging on bid day when she welcomed me into the house. Change the image to match the beat of the music. At this point I made sure to placed different pieces of footage like my friends dancing, everyone gathered in the TV room, picture of my Little and I, and other pictures showing our sisterhood. I used transitions like cross dissolve, additive dissolve, wipe, round iris, dip to black and dip to white.

Draft Video

My video is about the organization that has taken me and built me to be the strong, confident woman I am today. It is not just an organization but an experience, memories, and bonds. It is a huge part of my life since it is where I live, spend my days, and where my closest friends are. My theme for my blog is “All About Me” and throughout this class I have used my projects to express how and where my journey in life has taken me . In the first project I discussed my roots and heritage and now in this last project I have focused on where I currently am at in life, which is my college experience at WSU and as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

I started off by gathering footage on my iPhone of items and decorations that were Kappa related, both inside and outside of the house. Then I began to gather footage of girls hanging out in the house and my friends to show the people involved in the house who I have close relationships with. I also took video of pictures I felt displayed values I hold within the organization. I uploaded all of the videos onto premiere and then began compiling them. I used the footage from the Raw video footage we used in the project before this one as the opening sequence. Each video clip was edited for my desired time using the Mark In and Mark Out tool. Once they were the length I wanted I arranged them in the order I felt was the best. I began to add transitions, mostly Cross dissolve but also, dip to black or white, Iris Round, Clock Wipe and Gradient wipe. My intention was to get a song from Soundcloud and have it play the whole time because I didn’t like the audio but for some reason the song wouldn’t download so I will have to figure that out for the final video.

Let’s Play Categories

Upon delving into the black hole, also known as my backpack I was able to retrieve some items. I pulled from the depths a glasses case, cough drops, an iClicker,  a planner, a highlighter, a phone charger, a ponytail holder, chapstick, a pencil, and a protein bar. Then I proceeded to organize these items into a classification system. Beginning with the highest hierarchy of Backpack Items. This turns into the two sub categories of Personal Care and School Supplies. Personal Care branches off to the two units Edible and Beauty. Edible leads to a chapstick, a glasses case, and a ponytail holder. Meanwhile, School Supplies branches to Writing Tools, Organization and Electronics. The pencil and highlighter fall under Writing Tools. The Planner is filed under organization and the iClicker and phone charger are filed under Electronics.

Several of these were very easy to categorize. The Pencil and and Highlighter easily fell into the school supplies classification but the phone charger did not necessarily count as a school supply but it didn’t function as a personal care item either. It was able to be classified once I made an electronics unit under school supplies. School Supplies, Beauty Products, and Electronics were already pre-existing categories that were naturally adopted. Thinking of what to classify the glasses case was a bit difficult. Is it a beauty item? A health related item? A storage unit? I decided on placing it first under Personal Care because it had to do with the maintenance of my body and well being. Then it was filed under Beauty because it was also a fashion piece. The planner was on its alone in its category but it definitely needed to be categorized since it did not fall under electronics and writing utensils even though it is a school supply. The chapstick, ponytail holder were easily classified and were the main cause of the creation of the Personal Care sub-category then the beauty unit. The numerous beauty supplies made it necessary to create the category.

Overall, I felt as though the items had similar themes among them and the reason is because of the container they were in. My backpack is a storage unit for school supplies and items I will need throughout the day which means there will be some Personal Care items included. It makes more sense looking back and analyzing what kind of items would be in the object of our choice. I wonder if I had began thinking about the types of categories I would probably have in the backpack before I opened it up and took the items out, whether I would come up with the same ones? Clay Shirky’s Writing About the Internet discusses how it impossible to have an ideal perfect categorization and after completing this activity, I would have to completely agree. Some of these items inter-relate and could possibly fall under other categories or have new categories be created. It isn’t a perfect system but it doesn’t necessarily need to be as long as people are able to understand it and make the connections on their own.

Audio Story Final

At the beginning of this project my intent was to interview a couple different girls in my sorority and ask them “What does Kappa mean to you?” While I got some great answers about their experiences and what they have gotten out of joining Kappa Kappa Gamma, I really wanted to do something that was a little different and less awkward sounding. I decided to record me reading a letter to my younger self, giving advice on joining a sorority. I thought this approach was a more creative, fun and humorous which fits my personality more than the serious interviews. Since my theme is “All About me!” I figured having the story reflect who I am is important. I chose to “write” to my recently graduated self because that was a very pivotal time in my life. It was the end of an amazing journey and the beginning of a whole new adventure. This way listeners would hear about parts of my past, what I value, and what I am currently experiencing as a college student at Washington State University. I felt this integrated a variety of viewpoints and insights of me which ties into my blog theme.  It also allowed to be more expressive in the way I talked.

To create this audio I used my webcam on my computer to record my monologue and read the letter that I had written in my notebook. After uploading the recording onto Audition I listened to it on the program and used the Time Selection tool to cut out awkward pauses and background noises that were distracting. I shortened the recording a little bit to be more concise. I exported it to an mp3 and then uploaded it onto Soundcloud.

Audio Storytelling Draft

In my audio storytelling project I chose to discuss what my sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma means to me because my blog theme is all about me. Living in the sorority and being involved has made my sorority a huge aspect in my life. It has contributed so much to my college experience. I start off my audio recording explaining what Kappa means to me and then continue the story by interviewing my sorority sisters to share what Kappa means to them. I thought that by having my friends participate it would be more meaningful to show the variety of values and experiences provided through my sorority. I feel like the audio story shares my social life while my other project focused on my background. It is able to share the voices of people I love and at the same time what brought us together.

My creative process in thinking of what to talk about came from when I was asked recently what my sorority meant to me and I had to give an on the spot answer. I decided this would be a fun, but also meaningful thing to do to my friends. The answers are more honest than if they knew the question before hand. The answers were not as well put together or flow like it would have if they had been ready for the question but I thought it added a creative aspect in its unpolished form.

To make the audio story I used my computer webcam to first record my introduction and explanation of what Kappa means to me and then I asked several friends the same question. I uploaded the audio to Audition and put them on one track. I went through and edited out the “um’s” that I heard just like we did in the tutorial. I then uploaded it to my Soundcloud.
